DETAILS & DECOR: Holiday Entertaining with David Jackson

Indianapolis event planner, David Jackson, has experience planning the most elegant and memorable events in the city and for clients across the country. From galas to intimate dinner parties, Jackson has in-depth knowledge on how to entertain beautifully for your guests and enjoy your role as host for the holidays.

“The foundation of fine entertaining has everything to do with thinking of your guests’ comfort,” says Jackson. One of his favorite ways to make a guest feel special is to add personal touches to the event. Examples can be as simple as creating a place card for each guest and having a note of gratitude at his or her place setting, especially during the holidays.

During the holiday season, family traditions become beloved and cherished memories that last from childhood into adulthood. “I always encourage my clients to think about ways to honor their loved ones or uphold traditions,” says Jackson.  Jackson suggests sharing a family recipe on the back of a menu card, inviting the most senior guest to say grace, and showcasing family relics, like heirloom servingware or china, that honor generations of the family. Children especially find anticipation and comfort in family traditions like receiving a holiday ornament each year.

The stylish details, menu and family dynamics involved with hosting a family event can often become overwhelming for a host. Jackson advises his clients to do two to three elements of a party really well — strong and memorable details come through to your guests. Guests can also sense an anxious host, so try to take a moment before the event to relax.

“A warm smile and genuine spirit go further with your guests than a perfectly pleated napkin,” says Jackson.

Jackson enjoys collecting fine china and urges his clients not to be afraid to use their beautiful pieces for special occasions, especially with family and friends.

“The world is a complicated place and we host these intimate gatherings to celebrate one another and all that is good in the world. Share what you love, with those you love,” says Jackson.
