Santarossa Crafts Luxury Terrazzo Hard Surfaces with “Upcycled” Materials

Santarossa, “Premier Installation Company” Since 1924

Santarossa Mosaic & Tile Company, Inc. goes to great lengths to provide customers with the best in finished products made from the finest quality raw materials. The firm has access to virtually every major domestic and foreign supplier of ceramic, stone, and terrazzo in the world, and represents the most respected and established mills for its carpet and other resilient materials.

However, Rob Santarossa, third-generation partner of the Santarossa company, does not always have to go very far to access materials for terrazzo.  Rather than shipping in terrazzo from foreign suppliers, Santarossa often recovers materials from local sources.  Broken car mirrors, shattered windshields, and smashed beer bottles make up an array of upcycled ingredients for Santarossa to mix with an epoxy or cement binder to formulate the luxurious hard surfaces home and business owners find in their family rooms and foyers.  Terrazzo also allows for designers to draw up art designs with custom colors to give each work a unique look.

Terrazzo consists of marble, quartz, granite, glass or other suitable chips, sprinkled or unsprinkled, and poured with a binder that is cementitious or epoxy. Terrazzo is cured, ground and polished to a smooth surface or otherwise finished to produce a uniformly textured surface.

“Terrazzo floors have an outstanding record of durability and performance dating back over a thousand years. Routine maintenance includes dry and damp mopping, with an occasional spray buffing.  A nice glossy surface  is obtainable without chemicals or waxes.  It is really affordable for any corporation or homeowner,” explained Santarossa. “In comparison, carpet requires energy intensive daily vacuuming and periodic steam cleaning, in addition to replacement costs every 8 to 12 years. Carpet is very costly when weighed against terrazzo.”

Precast terrazzo slab and tiles can be applied to walls for a shower surround, kitchen backsplash and floor trim. In addition, terrazzo can also be precast for countertops or vanities.
