Home Preview – Meridian-Kessler Home & Garden Tour
Save the date for The Meridian-Kessler Home & Garden Tour which runs Saturday and Sunday, June 18 and 19. This longest running and largest tour of vintage homes in Indiana will showcase a variety of styles and ideas for home renovation, landscape and design. Should you be inspired and like to partner with a design professional, you may visit the IDC’s featured and directory of designers page and other website sections for showroom, product, contractor and artisan listings.
The Meridian-Kessler Neighborhood Association has offered the IDC a sneak preview of one of the homes featured on the tour. Allow us to introduce you to the home of Jim Morris and Bob Wood located at 533 East 57th Street.
About the Home: From the exterior, this home looks like a traditional Tudor. Inside, however, it’s completely contemporary thanks to a total renovation completed two years ago. When Jim Morris bought the home in 2008, it had been a neglected rental for some time. Morris acted as his own general contractor and transformed the home during a six-month-long project. He added a second story and opened up the floor plan. Morris, who had previously lived in homes with traditional decor, indulged his desire for a more modern interior, decorating with color and pattern.

Walter Knabe & Outré Connect
The IDC is a connecting point for design resources, industry professionals and the public. It is a goal of the IDC to Champion Design Excellence in the State and, often, we do not need to look outside our own doors to identify this excellence.
Over the past year, area showrooms, designers and artists began to move their studios and businesses to the IDC. Quite naturally, these creative and business-minded types quickly began to collaborate with one another, breeding a synergistic community.
The furniture designs pictured below are signature pieces brought to you by both Outré and Walter Knabe Studios. Outré is a family-owned and Indiana-based furniture manufacturer that pushes the limits of form and function while meeting the needs of their clients and pushing their creativity. Walter Knabe an Indiana-based and internationally recognized artist best known for his screenprinting techniques used to produce fine art canvas prints, wallcovering and fabric designs.
What happens when you combine the talents and skills of a custom furniture manufacturer and fine artist? You are looking at it. One-of-a-kind fabrics designed by Walter Knabe Studio have been hand-upholstered to classic Outré furniture personalities, Addie & Olivia, creating pieces of art.

IDC Hits 90% Leased!
Eckert-Wright Art & Design, Gradison Design-Build and Outdoor Environments Group
to Open in May
It’s with great excitement that we announce Eckert-Wright Art & Design, Gradison Design-Build, and Outdoor Environments Group (OEG) will soon join the IDC. The three businesses represent key facets of the design industry, Art & Design, Custom Homes and Remodeling and Landscape Architecture, further adding to the extent of resources available for one’s home at the Indiana Design Center and nearing the building to a 100% leased rate.
“The Indiana Design Center continues to take shape as construction on the first floor, retail showrooms near completion and with businesses like Ferguson, Holder Mattress and J. Baker Interiors already open to the public. Serious negotiations are underway for the remaining space,” said Melissa Averitt, Vice President and Director of Marketing and Sales for Pedcor Companies. “The strength and success of Design Center is driven by the tenancy and businesses like Eckert-Wright Art & Design, OEG and Gradison Design-Build are among the best our state has to offer,” continued Averitt.
“The convergence of art and design happening at the IDC and in the Arts & Design District is very attractive to the Eckert-Wright Art & Design gallery and makes the location a great fit. The first floor gallery will feature an eclectic mix of paintings and sculpture by regionally and nationally known artists, both traditional and modern, whose works span the 19th century to present. Among those are T.C. Steele, C. W. Mundy, Janet Scudder, Boaz Vaadia and internationally recognized Robert Rauschenberg, to name a few. We are very enthused to be introducing to the area two artists who are gleaning much national and international recognition, painter Eric Forstmann and sculptor Michael Kalish. We are also excited to offer and showcase antiques from R. Beauchamp Antiques, oriental rugs by Sarver’s, and provide interior design services,” said Dianne Wright of Eckert-Wright.

Both Gradison Design-Build and Outdoor Environments Group will be occupying space on the IDC’s second floor. “The second floor of the Indiana Design Center is an ideal location and provides a creative environment for us to collaborate with clients and designers. There are great resources to research and specify excellent solutions for our custom homes and remodeling projects. We look forward to sharing the energy of the Indian Design Center,” said Mark Gradison, Gradison Design- Build President.
“While many of the IDC’s showrooms cover home interiors, the home’s exterior is also very important. The services and products offered by Outdoor Environments Group & Indy Custom Pools truly help the IDC to be the comprehensive resource for design projects,” said Melissa Averitt. OEG owner, Chad Bruick, added “Through site analysis and careful design process we help our clients to see the potential of their outdoor space and then create that environment for them. Like other firms and design professionals in the building, we have a passion for what we do and look forward to sharing in this creative environment.”
Stay tuned to the blog and additional announcements about the official opening of each business!

IUPUI Student Design Show
This post is written by guest blogger and IDC intern, Tara Carlile, IIDA & ASID Student Member.
The Indiana Design Center was abuzz as Interior Design students from IUPUI had their work showcased on March 4th. This marked the 11th year for the event, hosted by the IUPUI Student Design Organization (SDO), and SDO wanted to try something new. In previous years, the event had always been held on the campus of IUPUI. This time around, they were determined to bring the show to the Design community rather than ask the Design community to come to the show. The IDC was the location for the event and more than happy to help the students! This tactic worked as it drew many more professionals to the event than ever before.
The Student Design Show is an all-afternoon affair, but the displaying of student design projects isn’t the only thing on the agenda. Vendors bring products and literature to help inform students of current trends, professionals speak on topics related to design, and the event is ended with an awards ceremony for the students’ work.

Students visit a vendor table and learn about their products while picking up a freebie typically provided by the vendors!

Jeryl Mitsch & Cynthia Walker stop by the IMA Design Arts Society info. table hosted by Chip Kalleen.

Cheryl Durst, Executive Vice President and CEO of IIDA, laughs as she gives her keynote speech on the "Future of Design".

Faux Finishing Workshop with Ed Mattingly
Last week, Sherwin-Williams hosted a workshop at the IDC with featured presenter and renouned faux finisher, Ed Mattingly. With over 60 trade professionals in attendance, it was a great event, providing information about faux techniques and finishes and related products. Ed also tied in guidance on incorporating Robert Allen fabrics as the finishes and textiles relate to one another (Robert Allen fabrics can be found through a designer at the Trade Source located in the IDC).
We could share more, but Ed summed up his visit so well in his own blog post. Head over to his blog for a behind-the-scenes look at his visit and even a video recap of his tour through Walter Knabe’s studio!
And did you know…the IDC’s second floor Design Resource Library features a full color selector display from Sherwin-Williams? There are over 1,300 color chip options available for design professionals to utilize.

Full color display in the IDC resource library.

24th Annual Art & Antiques Show
Going strong for 24 years, the Indianapolis Art & Antiques Show & Sale kicks off this Thursday evening with the Preview Party & Sale and continues through Sunday with luncheons, lectures and a show filled with great exhibitors. Presented by the Methodist Hospital Task Core, the event not only brings premium art and antique dealers to a single location, it’s also committed to supporting Methodist Hospital through the Methodist Health Foundation.
There are many reasons to be excited about this show and for the IDC there is one very important reason: it champions design excellence in the State (one of the IDC’s key goals). This year, Duane Hampton is the Friday luncheon speaker. Ms. Hampton is the widow of design legend, Mark Hampton, an Indiana native who is a design leader on the national stage and was named “20 Greatest Designers of All Time” by Architectural Digest in 2010. The lecture is based upon Ms. Hampton’s most recent book, MARK HAMPTON: An American Decorator.
Following the Friday lecture, one can also attend Saturday’s “Art in the Courtyard” featuring local artists, Magdalena Hoyos-Segovia and Mary Johnston or brunch featuring David Jackson of Premier Events and master florist Tim Kelley of Palmer Kelley Designs who will present “Memorable Events: Entertaining in High Style“.

New Floor Models at Outré
With thousands of fabric options and combinations available, the to-the-trade Outré showroom floor is every-changing and demonstrates the power of creativity. Hot off the truck from the manufacturing facility in LeGrange, IN, Outré is now featuring new versions of Dee, Troy and Ben.
About Dee & Troy as described by Outré:
Dee is the perfect hostess. You often find her inviting the girls over for wine and movies. When the family gets together for the holidays, they can always count on her hospitality. And nobody can top her cocktail parties. She’s calm, cool and levelheaded. So when extra guests arrive, she doesn’t worry. Dee has the space to accommodate everyone.
Troy’s personality is continental. Not just because he’s got broad shoulders and lots of elbow room. But because of all he can do for you. He can hold your remotes, your snacks, your kids, or your feet. And he can do it…all at once!
About Ben as described by Outré:
At home with everyone, Ben loves to entertain. He’s the perfect Sunday afternoon chill spot, parking place for a movie night, or even naptime host for snugglers. Though he likes big spaces, he never leaves anyone feeling alone. He’s a great companion, always ready to give you a safe place to fall back on. And he never, ever talks back.
Outré is located on the second floor of the Indiana Design Center and you can learn more about them at itstheniche.com.
