Santarossa Grand Opening & IDC Open House

If you have visited the first floor of Indiana Design Center recently you probably witnessed the craftsmanship and detail that’s gone into each feature in the new Santarossa showroom.  With the terrazzo floors complete and columns gleaming with iridescent tile, only a few details remain.  Showroom completion is just around the corner and Santarossa is thrilled to announce the showroom’s Grand Opening to the public on Saturday, November 12 from 2 pm to 8 pm!  The Grand Opening will coincide with an Indiana Design Center Open House from 5 pm to 8 pm featuring special showroom offers, artists and the latest home and holiday products to arrive at the IDC.  All are welcome to attend!

Domenic Santarossa, founder, led a family tradition that has continued for over 3 generations.

As the state’s premier natural stone and hard surfaces provider, Santarossa works with residential and commercial design professionals, builders and homeowners on a variety of hard surfaces applications that range from marble countertops to natural stone mosaics. Santarossa’s work has graced some of the finest homes in Indiana and their commercial projects include IU Health North Hospital and French Lick Casino & Resort.

The history of Santarossa began in Italy where its founder, Domenic M. Santarossa, left his native country for Germany to study terrazzo and mosaic trade. In 1913 and at the age of twenty, D. Santarossa immigrated to the United States to build his business. By 1920, he moved the business to Indianapolis where it has thrived for over eighty-five years as led by generations of Santarossa family members and business partners. Bringing with it generations of industry experience, the new Santarossa showroom includes a mix of exclusive and unique products available in a retail setting, expanding the accessibility of their exceptional products and expertise.  Quality product and unsurpassed craftsmanship was Domenic Santarossa’s focus when he opened his doors in 1921 and remains the firm’s mantra over 85 years later.

The Santarossa custom marble and granite division is unequaled in Indiana and offers a variety of marble, granite, quartz and onyx fabricating, refinishing and custom design using state-of-the-art technology like a CNC Abrasive Water Jet, an In-Line Polisher, and a digital templating system. TheSwankyAbode.com Styles

The new Swanky Abode store is now open on the first floor of the Indiana Design Center.  We would like to share and preview the styles you’ll find when you visit the Swanky Abode showroom or their online shop at TheSwankyAbode.com.

Swanky: Happy, whimsical and humorous. Swanky style is light, bright and cheerful. It’s our gifts, our books, our toys and our trinkets, each a bit out of the ordinary and destined to bring a little joy. Think funny books, owl alarm clocks and air plants that grow wherever you fancy.

Swanky

Industrial: Hearty, functional and bold. Industrial style incorporates durable items taken from a commercial environment and blended into the home. It is rustic pieces made from materials like iron and unfinished raw wood, used in unexpected ways. Think worktables with patina, metal stools lined at a bar or galvanized tubs for spring planting.

Industrial

Mid Century: The finest collection of mid century modern furniture we can get our hands on. Streamlined, sexy and iconic, our mid century style is timeless and can bring refinement and luxury to any space. Think McCobb, Knoll, Pearsall and Baughman.

Mid Century

Safari Chic: Masculine and dramatic yet refined. Safari Chic is an approach to home design that utilizes soulful, natural materials such as black walnut, rosewood, aged leather, mohair and wool – all touched by craftsman hands. Think silver-rimmed cocktail glasses, handsome leather couches and repurposed walnut hutches.

History of the Business

Telling the history of our household is telling the history of our business. At one time, each of us held positions at corporate jobs. We worked hard, but never for ourselves. Not until a few years back, when we started to toss around some big ideas. Eventually, we left corporate to live out the lifestyle we always dreamed. In doing so, we focused on building a family business that would be multi-faceted, creative and could best embody each of our strengths. Israel had management experience. Jerrod could lead large companies and groups of people. Laura worked most of her life with design and merchandizing. Addison studied and lived art.

And so it began, in December of 2008. Since that fateful beginning, we have opened and operated six pop-up stores in Ohio, and have most recently set our sights on Carmel, Indiana. Our website, www.theswankyabode.com, came to fruition this year and contains a bevy of products, inspiration and links to our social media outlets.

What you see in our stores is how we live our lives. We are eclectic, stylish and bold. We are believers in blending vintage with contemporary, traditional with bohemian. We cherish humor, family and quality pieces in our homes. And now, we are thrilled to continue the journey and the experiences.

The Swanky Abode “Popping Up” at the Indiana Design Center

Later this month, a pop-up shop called The Swanky Abode will open its doors at the Indiana Design Center. As a pop-up, the 2,000 square-foot location will be open to the public but only for a limited time.

The Swanky Abode is the store for stylish living. It is an urban home furnishings boutique that believes homes should be comfortable and joyful environments meant for real living. The Jones family scours the country seeking unique pieces to liven the home and the heart, creating spaces for all tastes devoted to form and function.

The Swanky Abode’s distinctive blend of vintage and new creates symmetry between the past and a contemporary future. By reclaiming treasured relics and exploring new designs, The Swanky Abode can help you make your home, your refuge.

Michael Kalish – Rust & Renaissance

Coats Wright Art and Design to Feature Work by Michael Kalish

Coats Wright Art and Design has announced an upcoming Michael Kalish exhibit that will coincide with Carmel Artomobilia.  Michael Kalish, internationally renowned artist and sculptor, is no stranger to the automobile.  For 15 years, he has built his career on innovative use of license plates, car parts and most recently, vintage truck tailgates to create striking works of art that celebrate American culture, icons and causes.

Michael scours salvage yards for the materials he uses.  The colors are original, the rust and dents come from many years of use and abuse.   He cuts, hammers, manipulates and welds the metal into beautiful roses and abstract sculpture that pleases the eye, much as the Fords, Chevy’s and Dodges did when they were new.

Michael utilizes his talent to celebrate icons and bring awareness to important causes as well.  From his monumental installation commemorating the life of Muhammad Ali, to the upcoming large-scale public work, 24M, to promote awareness of COPD, a chronic lung disease that affects nearly 24 million Americans.

Coats Wright Art and Design is pleased to have an exhibition of Michael’s work opening Saturday, September 10 from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.  Stop in and visit while attending the Carmel Artomobilia, 2011.   Enjoy these “vehicles” as they begin their second life as works of art!

Artist’s Statement
For me, gestures and feelings are the two things I have worked with in the past five years of my career. To transmit these sensations, I have chosen the human figure. I find that by presenting the viewer with something as familiar as the human form, the spectator opens easily to those feelings that have the power to evolve and elevate us on our every day life, as I try to convey on my paintings. I have always admired the simplicity and power of the iconic figure as well as the ‘Madonna’s’ from the great masters. I have taken some of the elements and tried to transport them to a more modern type of representation by using simple blocks of colors, but leaving the faces timeless and ageless like those on the Icons and Madonna’s. In addition, I have preferred to make the identities of the people represented in my paintings to be irrelevant and keep the color palette simple in order to enhance the beauty and energy of the message. I carefully make all my boards out of wood and linen. I reach the high intensity on my colors by building from egg tempera to oil and pigments.

Her abstract paintings place emphasis on the expression of inner thoughts, ideas and emotions.  “I use color, forms, shapes, and composition to give life to abstract concepts and feelings. My paintings are intended to represent the movement of my unconscious on canvas. Through my art work, I express a view of the world  which is not bound by material reality but rather, by the continuous evolution of everyday human emotions.

Slawek

About Slawek
Motto for Slawek’s Work: “Although I have never learned how to read and write. I paint a picture residing in my mind”
- by Dr. Sota Kurylo

The artist, Slawek (SU-AH – veck), “the European artist from Indianapolis”, born in communist Poland, moved to the United States in the 1980s and his path has taken him from East Coast to the Midwest where he currently resides in Indianapolis. He has traveled around the world and in his artistic endeavors he especially enjoys capturing reflected images. As artist said: “Remember, it’s exciting when the image is confusing at first, and the eye is able to gradually make sense of what it’s seeing. This is what REFLECTIONS are about”.

Slawek does “draft notes with a camera.” In photographing these reflected images, Slawek’s camera interprets Pop-Art (advertisement) which originated in America many years ago and is dominant today in streets, stores, and even our homes.

Constance Edwards Scopelitis

About the Artist
Constance has made a career in the world of Fine Art Oil Portraiture. She approaches her subjects from the inside out, meaning she senses the inner personality and the essence of a person before she begins to armour the portrait with flesh and bones.
