Julie O’Brien Design Group :: IDC Celebrates Women Business Owners

Indiana Design Center supports American Express in
“Celebrating Women Entrepreneurs’ Business, Goals, and Journey.”

To highlight the achievements of women business owners and to ignite pride and conversation within the community, American Express has implemented a four-week series, “Celebrating Women Business Owners.” The Indiana Design Center is home to several women owned businesses within the design industry and is proud to support this initiative by showcasing the successes of women business owners in the coming weeks.

Meet Julie O’Brien, owner of Julie O’Brien Design Group:

Julie O’Brien defines the biggest obstacle in developing your own business is often times overcoming yourself. O’Brien worked under other designers until she realized a long-standing dream to open her own design firm. “I wanted to be really experienced in design before opening my own business,” O’Brien said.  “I had my own vision for design and I knew I wouldn’t be able to achieve that vision unless I had my own business.” Stepping out and taking the risk of creating your own brand can be intimidating for new designers and business owners, but O’Brien took on the challenge in 1989 and hasn’t looked back since.

From starting her business on her dining room table 23 years ago, to expanding to two locations in Carmel and Chicago, O’Brien claims that her balanced approach, small manageable steps, and the right guidance has lead her to her success and national recognition.  When asked what her signature style is that brought her to be featured on HGTV Homes Across America and in numerous interior design periodicals, O’Brien admitted she likes to keep things simple. “I don’t really have a signature design, good design is really about understanding what your client wants and translating it for them. My main goal is to create the space to look and feel like the person who lives there.” O’Brien prides herself on making her designs fit the style of her clients.  “It’s a defeat to me, when someone can tell that a particular designer was involved.”

Julie O’Brien Design Group fulfills a wide variety of needs for the client, working primarily in residential design.  They can be found on the second floor of the Indiana Design Center in Suite 209.

The idea of a home reflecting an individual has been the guiding force for Julie and her firm for more than twenty years.

The firm specializes in interior design/interior architecture of residential spaces and enjoys a loyal, friendly and ever expanding national client base.

Julie O’Brien Design Group has also delivered distinction to Indiana. Five of their client’s beautiful Indiana homes have been featured on HGTV’s national television show, “Homes Across America.”
